So -- my friend who has my Dell tower, trying to determine if it can be saved/get a new drive (dual drive system) is so busy he either hasn't had time to check the drive or is swamped at one of his two major jobs. He's avoiding my emails. I need to update an ancient web site soonest. I had a mental blip and forgot to get a floppy drive in the new laptop. So --

Suggestions? What would be a good, reasonably priced floppy drive USB add-on for a Toshiba Satellite S955 laptop?

The problem is, my Dreamwever 3 is on a floppy. No, I don't want to spend a fortune on the latest version. I'm moving my stuff to WordPress, most likely. This site will be leaving to WordPress this year, too. But not yet. They have a big interview on CNN coming up -- I really want to update their FMRs.

Alfreda, who will be visiting Fry's in the next couple of days....

Q: Does User still hate WIN 8 with the fury of a thousand suns?

A: Yes, Indeed.

I just had to yank the battery from this laptop to get the keyboard and mouse clicks to start working again. The tech on the phone had no idea what happened, or how to stop it from happening again, but at least it's working again.

I am torn between returning this computer in the next couple of days and buying an Apple (which, as I'm not employed right now, is a hardship) or calling Microsoft and asking for detailed instructions to install the previous operating system, which according to the license I have the right to do.

The warranty with returns at Costco expires the fifth, so I have to decide now. And I need my computer for entering job apps. This is %%&$$$##@%&*& inconvenient and very frustrating.

Not buying MS Office. Praying Apple does not screw up their systems for people doing business on machines, because I don't want a tablet to play with, I need a #$%^#@@@$$% computer!

Does this mean I have to take Mercury retrograde seriously from now on?

The tower is in the shop, so I am communicating with the evil new laptop.

I hope your holidays have been happy! I will be sending out coupon codes to everyone who contacted me in the past day or so today, universe willing.

And I don't mean NCIS. A hard drive has failed on my computer. This is a six year old Dell tower, so not sure it is worth repairing. Just getting a new power supply was surprising in price.

The new machine is charging. I wasn't intending to transport everything off this computer. Looks like I'll be moving stuff all this week before my trip. Worst of all, I may not be able to maintain an old web site anymore, because I maintain it with Dreamweaver 3.0.

Hey -- old tech loves old tech. This nonprofit has no money to buy the new program, and no money to pay me to upgrade the site. And I have no extra energy to do it gratis.

Sometimes life is like that. But I think my deadline for "Fifth Child" just got shoved back to January.

Must figure out if firewall is working.

This is a Why I Hate Microsoft story. Enter at your own risk.

So I signed up for Microsoft's auto downloads back when I was ill, because I was rather busy getting well and didn't need computer problems on top of this. You would think that this service would A) give you all service packs and fixes you are entitled to as an owner of the software and b) would tell you, "By the Way, you haven't updated your X program. Go to the Microsoft site for further information."

This is a roundabout way of saying, guess what? My Office 2000 Premium has never had a single patch downloaded to it.
The story Continues )
Well done, Microsoft. I think I'll avoid Chrome, too. Just to be on the safe side.

-- but the loss of my BBediting system with Firefox has really hurt me. "Make Link" has its uses, but it takes the page you are on. So if I bring a link from somewhere else to paste into my Live Journal, the system changes the link to my Live Journal "Make an Entry" page before I can paste it in! Or this has been my experience.

My attempt to upgrade with the newer BB version leads to an add-on that is packaged in an extension my machine doesn't recognize. Attempts to remedy this took over an hour and did not result in the machine acknowledging the extension. I just don't have time for this -- I'm still ramping up to the fast pace life demands right now, and now my father's health tanking has really complicated things.

So -- there will be posts this week before I hit the road, on numerous topics. Just not quickly.

I just fired up my datebook, and all the individually entered events (like doctors appointments and other MAJOR things) are gone.

The addresses, thank the universe (what is LEFT of them) are still there.

Apparently I get to spend this week setting up a Google datebook.

Yes, we will all join the new evil empire IF THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES WHOSE PRODUCTS WORK!

Testing....

Well, after several bouts of "addons.mozilla.com has failed..." or some such junk, I may have the widgit installed. Let's test it. Here's a web site that includes a book I picked up on vacation at the Lincoln Memorial in Springfield, IL. The book is The Pioneer Village Cookbook by Ann Chandonnet.

Well, it's not working. I think one of my protections I have on the computer is blocking it -- it uses javascript, which I allow on occasion. Back to the drawing board. But first back to work.
alfreda89: 3 foot concrete Medieval style gargoyle with author's hand resting on its head. (Default)
Well, I resisted upgrading to a higher level from my 3.21 because I REALLY liked BBCode -- the add-on made my life a lot easier, let me post links at lightning speed, etc. Someone told me that there was a program for the newest version that would do the same thing, so I upgraded.

Apparently she was running 6.0. Mozilla's site gave me 6.0.1, which the newer program is not compatible with.

Unamused.

Haven't yet found anything else that will create links in context forms, BBCode, HTML. BBCode also would put in the symbols I use a lot. Sigh.

Disappointment.

I have been slaving over a nonprofit site I help out and get very little money from. They ask at the last moment, for incredible stuff, tons of it, and this weekend it is driving me nuts because I WANT TO WRITE THE NEXT ALLIE SCENE.

Also uploading my books to the new BackListEbooks site, which is gonna be AWESOME. My novels are up; I just have two e-anthologies I'm in to put up. Doranna Durgin rocks, and so does her idea!

And just read the manuscript for Jennifer Stevenson's forthcoming book about slacker demons. GREAT BOOK! This woman is the next Jennifer Crusie, I swear. Funny, heartwarming, sexy -- I'll let you know when the title solidifies.

Well, I awakened to the blue screen of death. Not fun. I knew I should have shut the blasted thing down before bed.

It wants me to check for updated drivers. This seems to be a problem. There doesn't seem to be any one-stop shopping on this, of course. I went to check out printer drivers and USB drivers. I'm supposed to go through Computer Management to find the USB drivers, Click on Device Manager, and so forth.

There is no "Device Manager" option in the tree.

I swear I have done all my MS updates!

I would back out and go check other areas, but the Add/Delete program seems to have hung on an old TurboTax program I'm trying to delete. So it may be reboot with something open, which we all know is A Bad Thing.

This computer is only 5 years old, and after the week with the car, I really don't want to replace it. But I'm starting to wonder about it. Also, wondering if the Comodo and I are not compatible. They have the Geekbuddy service. May have to try it out. I didn't think I had it, but every time the machine reboots, it tells me I do have it.

UPDATE: Device Manager has mysteriously returned to the list. Things are not enhanced, suggesting I should do this. But -- "Other Devices" has vanished. *Sigh*

Continuing Update: I don't think these are updating -- I think they are re-installing from MS SYSTEM. And -- the world "enhanced" is not appearing.

I am NOT amused....

I went in to the Add/Remove list to get rid of the Palm 3.5 which also doesn't work...and it's not listed there. Although I can find the shortcut that doesn't work in the start-up menu.

I think I'll go run errands instead.
alfreda89: 3 foot concrete Medieval style gargoyle with author's hand resting on its head. (Chai anime)
A free one? A cheap one? I found the diskettes for Palm 3.5, but without having a hand held cradle attached to my desktop, apparently the program will not install correctly. And I don't even have the correct plug-ins for this old cradle -- I'd have to get a converter to plug it into my UBS router.

This may just be the universe's way of telling me to import the address book into a new program. Importing the calendar is probably a lost cause, but that can be re-created. The address book is the thing I really don't want to have to enter by hand!

I'm feeling very Chai right now. *Sigh*
alfreda89: 3 foot concrete Medieval style gargoyle with author's hand resting on its head. (Default)
I said I never throw out anything potentially useful. Genetics in action -- I am descended from the people who kept rain parkas because every 17 years hurricanes start up again.

Now, they claim to always install over the last stuff. Is that true when what you installed is defective? (The last update Palm offered on the Palm III versions was 4.1.something, at it continues to try installing, says it has installed, and then tries again when you try to open the program.) And will an older version install over a so-called later version?

I'm leaning toward using the Microsoft uninstall, and then installing the 3.5. At this point, I'm hoping there is an import feature for the address book....

But now, a break. I'm actually going to write something....
alfreda89: 3 foot concrete Medieval style gargoyle with author's hand resting on its head. (Boobies!)
Well, every combination of "Palm 3.5 OS software download free" is bringing up apps for the Palm, but not the basic software I need to reinstall on my desktop. Sigh. Back to searching through boxes.
alfreda89: 3 foot concrete Medieval style gargoyle with author's hand resting on its head. (A light in dark places)
Tornado watch time! It already looks ugly northeast of here -- red and purple (purple Very Bad.)

Well, I have, with the help of a friend, isolated an address book. Whether it's the current one, or an older one, remains to be seen. But the newly-installed update refuses to repair or install, it just loops.

I am now looking for the plastic container of CDs containing the Palm 3.5 CD. I have no idea where the diskettes are -- they're not in the obvious place, dang it. I even found the dead cradle and the Palm (I throw out little, I fear. Maybe I can steampunk the cradle.)

Baking has yet to commence, but will start momentarily. Gluten-free dough waits for no computer screw-up....

**Sigh**

The backup system that has been glowing as recording merrily along for six years? If I am reading the data correctly, it hasn't recorded anything new since 2006.

I am officially not a happy camper.

I may be taking the IOmega to the target range. I'm just not sure a .357 will express my rage.

Perhaps .45 bullets....
alfreda89: 3 foot concrete Medieval style gargoyle with author's hand resting on its head. (Default)
I think I will go out for a while and boil my hands in the hot tub. Then I will check gig sticks for prior versions of this stuff.

Comodo was supposed to isolate this while the install happened, but I don't think it did, or I don't understand the feature. *Sigh*
alfreda89: 3 foot concrete Medieval style gargoyle with author's hand resting on its head. (Default)
Everything has disappeared. I hope I can find the file in the computer and re-attach it to the desktop....
alfreda89: 3 foot concrete Medieval style gargoyle with author's hand resting on its head. (USS Enterprise Lightning)
I am quaking in my boots. My Palm calendar won't open -- the error has to do with personal ID info, not the program, so I'm trying an update to see if that will work.

I only use the desktop feature right now -- haven't used a handheld in years, it's not in budget since the last died. I sure hope I haven't lost my address book and calendar.

I will be /unhappy/.
